New Moon, which opened on Friday, took in just over $140 million in its first weekend, making it the third-biggest opening weekend in movie history.
It came in just behind The Dark Night, which earned $158.4 million during its 2008 opening weekend, and Spider-Man 3, which earned just over $151 million during its opening weekend in 2007.
New Moon doubled the first-weekend gross of last year’s Twilight, and half of the cash from New Moon’s opening came from pre-sales.
